WEG Soft Starters, Variable Speed Drives and Motor Protection in Toowoomba
The control gear that sits between your power supply and your motor, so the motor starts cleanly, runs at the speed the job needs, and survives the surges that kill unprotected motors.
Donaldson Electric Works stocks WEG SSW07 soft starters to 110kW and WEG CFW500 variable speed drives to 30kW here in Toowoomba, along with fuse switches for the protection layer above them. We supply the electricians who install this gear right across the Darling Downs and regional Queensland, and we can spec the right control for the motor you are buying at the same time.

The WEG-on-WEG advantage
Pair a WEG drive with a WEG motor and the warranty doubles
Run a WEG SSW07 soft starter or WEG CFW500 variable speed drive in front of a WEG motor and the warranty on both the motor and the control unit lifts from one year to two. There are no hoops to jump through, it is the standard warranty that applies when the motor and the starter are a matched WEG pair. It is the strongest reason to buy the motor and the control gear together from one supplier who matches them properly, rather than bolting a mismatched drive onto a motor after the fact.

What this gear does
Three jobs, one aim: protect the motor and control how it runs
Soft starters
Control the voltage and current during start and stop, easing the motor up to speed in a gentle ramp instead of hitting it with full load the instant it switches on. That protects the motor, limits the current peak on your supply, and reduces mechanical shock on couplings, gears and belts. A soft starter does not control running speed.
Common on three phase industrial motors from around 7.5kW up.
Variable speed drives (VSDs)
Give you the protection of a controlled start and also control the motor’s speed and torque through the whole run. That is how you dial water flow up or down on a pump, or change the speed of a conveyor or machine to suit the work. On pumps, easing the motor down also reduces water hammer in the pipework.
Common in pumping, irrigation, manufacturing and process lines.
Fuse switches
The protection layer above the starter, sitting between the starting mechanism and the mains. They guard both the motor and the starting gear from surges and overload, so a power event does not take the whole setup down.
Fitted with the starting system, not instead of it.
Why it matters
Switch a large motor on with no soft starter or VSD and it pulls maximum power straight away to break from standstill. Do that repeatedly and you shorten the motor’s life and stress your supply. The control gear is cheap insurance against expensive downtime.
Protection first, speed control second.

Who buys it and when
Sold to electricians, offered to every motor customer
Most of this gear goes to the installer, the electrician wiring the job right across Toowoomba and the Darling Downs. Plenty of customers already have a soft starter or VSD in place.
Either way, when someone buys a motor from us we ask how they are starting it: do they have a VSD, do they have a soft starter, and if they do not, we tell them what the motor needs. On larger motors that usually means a soft starter as a minimum, for the motor’s protection and for a clean start on the supply.
- Electricians and contractors specifying protection and control for a job.
- Motor buyers who need the right starter matched to the motor at point of sale.
- Pump and irrigation operators who need to vary flow through a VSD.
- Manufacturers and process sites that need to change machine or conveyor speed.
Why buy it from us
We match the control to the motor, in one conversation
Because we sell the WEG motors and the WEG control gear, we can size the starter or drive to the motor at the same time you buy it, hold the common sizes here in Toowoomba, and set you up for the two-year warranty rather than leaving you to work out the pairing yourself. If you are an electrician anywhere across the Darling Downs or regional Queensland, you get a supplier who stocks the range and knows the WEG catalogue. If you are the end user, you get told what your motor actually needs before it costs you a rewind.

Common questions
Motor automation and control, answered
Simplest way to decide: if you only need the motor to start and stop cleanly and be protected, a soft starter does the job. If you also need to change the motor’s speed while it runs, for example to vary pump flow or conveyor speed, you need a variable speed drive, because a soft starter does not control running speed. Tell us the motor and the application and we will tell you which one fits.
We stock WEG SSW07 soft starters to 110kW and WEG CFW500 variable speed drives to 30kW in Toowoomba, with the rest of the range available through our WEG supply within a few days across the Darling Downs and regional Queensland.
As a rule of thumb, larger three phase industrial motors from around 7.5kW and up should have a soft starter as a minimum. Switch a big motor on with nothing in front of it and it draws full power the instant it starts, which stresses both the motor and your supply.
Yes. Running a WEG SSW07 soft starter or CFW500 VSD with a WEG motor lifts the warranty on both the motor and the control unit from one year to two, under normal warranty terms with no extra conditions. Buying the motor and the control gear together from us is how you make sure the pairing qualifies.
Yes. Most of this gear goes to installers, so supplying your electrician is the normal path. We can also spec it alongside a motor you are buying from us so it all arrives matched and ready to install.
A fuse switch sits between the mains and the starting gear as an extra layer of protection, guarding both the motor and the starter from surges and overload. It works alongside the soft starter or VSD, not instead of it. We can advise whether your setup needs one.
Not sure what your motor needs? Ask us.
Tell us the motor and the job and we’ll spec the right soft starter or drive, match it for the two-year warranty, and get it to you or your electrician.
